Lice Eggs vs. Dandruff: What’s Causing Your Scalp Issues?
Have you ever been confused by the small white dots on your scalp, which either fall on your shoulders or stick to your hair? If this is what you are dealing with, you might end up confusing your condition with something else.
Let’s take the example of lice eggs vs dandruff. Both conditions are different but can look similar to people. The important fact is that you need different ways to treat each. Dandruff treatment cannot treat lice infestation, and vice versa.
So, it becomes important to identify the current conditions by their symptoms and signs to get the right treatment. We have mentioned their key differences in this article to let you differentiate between them better.
Dandruff
Probably, we do not need to explain it much as everyone among us goes from it at least once in his/her life. This is a scalp condition that happens when a yeast Malassezia breaks down saturated fatty acids from Sebum oil (naturally produced in our body and beneficial for skin) and leaves unsaturated ones behind.
This leads to oily skin, and the dead cells combine, resulting in white or yellowish flakes.
Its symptoms include:
- Large and visible flakes on the scalp
- Redness
- Itching
- Oiliness or dryness
- Greasiness
- Indirect and temporary hair loss
There is no age limit for dandruff to affect individuals. It affects people regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, and health status.
However, individuals with weaker or oversensitive immune systems are more prone to getting dandruff. The reason is hypersensitivity to Malassezia.
Our immune system sometimes considers it harmful, which results in overreaction. This contributes to delayed recovery and increased symptoms, even redness and inflammation, which are not so common in dandruff.
This condition is not contagious but can spread to other body parts of the affected person. That scenario may be referred to as Seborrheic Dermatitis. Over-the-counter treatments are available for it.
Lice Eggs
Lice are small insects that can pass from one’s head to another via hair-to-hair contact or using the item where lice are present (hats, clothing, comb, etc.).
They have shorter lifespans but multiply rapidly. The female louse lays many eggs, up to 10 per day! They feed on our blood. Lice can be seen with the naked eye and even removed with the help of a narrow-toothed comb.
Their eggs are small, white, and tear-shaped, and they are also visible. This is what makes it confusing to differentiate it from dandruff flakes. Do not worry; we have mentioned some ways to differentiate between both.
Symptoms of lice infestation include:
- Itching
- Spotting a lice
- A sensation of something running on the head
- Intense itching where scratching becomes irresistible
- White dots on hair (lice eggs)
Usually, the eggs are smaller than flakes of dandruff. Lice causes intense itching when they bite. So, do you want these little insects to make you scratch your scalp while they have left the place after sucking the blood? For sure, no.
So, what is its treatment? Well, its treatment is available, but let’s first talk about the ways to differentiate between lice eggs and dandruff to better decide what you need to treat your scalp condition.
Ways to identify each
You see, we have provided some information about both conditions so it will become easier to find key differences. Dandruff flakes are bigger and white or yellowish. They look greasy and are often found on the scalp. These flakes often fall on shoulders.
On the other hand, we do not have to talk much about lice. They are black, yellow, or dark brown and can easily be spotted. You will identify lice crawling on the head and the intense itching resulting from their bite.
Their eggs can be mistaken for flakes. Look at the appearance of white dots. If they are teardrop-shaped, white in color, stuck to the hair shaft near the scalp, and slightly difficult to remove, they are most likely lice eggs. The presence of lice itself resolves the confusion.
Lice eggs are smaller than flakes. Their appearance will help you identify the existing condition. You may have both conditions simultaneously.
What about treatment?
There is a treatment for sure for both. An anti-dandruff shampoo is used for dandruff, and anti-lice products are used to remove lice infestations. However, both conditions can appear in the future. Follow the instructions written on the product label to get the best out of it.
If the symptoms are not severe, there is no need to get treatment. If these conditions affect your daily life, you should use OTC products or visit a doctor for personalized treatment.
